Living Room in Kujiragaoka
Kujiragaoka Arcade is located in Hitachiota city, Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan. “Living Room in Kujiragaoka” started inside an empty clothing store within this arcade. After painting the interior white, carpets were laid down throughout the space.
Locals and storeowners of the arcade were then asked if they would like to contribute anything to the room. The collected items are placed on the carpets transforming the space into a “living room” open to the public. Some sat on the stool, while others talked together, or read a book. Typically this is a life-scape situated within the domestic home. However in this room, the items are always changed through barter with locals allowing the layout of room to change, along with our behavior in this room.
This space is reminiscent of a city store space, yet simultaneously like a room in your house. Neither public nor private. “Living Room in Kujiragaoka” is a project to make a “True Space” by cultivating a “living” room together.
This is an art project that builds a “living room” space by furniture trading, which makes the living room open to people living in the town.
First, we will find a vacant store in the town and put a carpet there.
Then, we will ask people in the neighborhood to donate unnecessary furniture. We will place all furniture in the living room one by one, and as it starts to look like a living room, we will begin the trading shop where people can trade their unwanted belonzzgings. We will observe and take notes of the changes caused by the trading of furniture and the various communication that occur between people.
The “living room” will create an opportunity to reflect on their daily life by setting a place to just “be there.” We hope that the “living room,” a place of spontaneous change and formation of new and unexpected relationships, will become a part of the people’s lifestyles in the town.
This project was launched by artist Jun Kitazawa in 2010.
